This is my finished synthetical cubism drawing, it was supposed to be fractured planes from different point so it's not exactly how I wanted it, the Lily and the butterfly however are on top of the other things so that is kind of 3D.
My idea behind the drawing was nature, which is depicted by the Lily and it's leaves, the butterfly, the grass, the tornado, the cloud, the sun and the water droplet in the water, and new modern colours with it to depict the balance betwewen technoligal art and old fashioned water paint.
The coloring method I used however was with those powder crayons and i messed up pretty bad. The tornado is proof of that, since in the first place it wouldn't have been there but then the black from the music note smudge on my hand and then I couldn't get it away.
This blog is a part of my ART curriculum at IST; where I am keeping a developmental notebook. However; due to my clumsiness I usually lose it withing three weeks of the school year. Along with other student; therefore we're planning digitalising everything.

Progress and Finish of part 1 of Assesment
The first part of the Assesment was to make an Analytical Cubism Charcoal Drawing, of a guitar, with a few flowers and boxes.
We first sketched out our plan of what exactly to do.
And then we used the technique of carbon paper to copy our drawing onto a thicker, colored piece of paper, in my instance it was grey.
I then put some pieces of yellowish newspaper text on some negative spaces, and started shading and coloring using only a black and white scale.
This is how it turned out:

That's it, that's the update of my work so far. Now, i'll start working on the next part of the assesment:
the Synthetic Cubism Painting.
Definition of Syntetic Cubism from ABOUT.COM
Synthetic Cubism grew out of Analytic Cubism. It was developed by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque and then copied by the Salon Cubists. Picasso and Braque discovered that through the repetition of "analytic" signs their work became more generalized, more geometrically simplified and flatter. Overlapping planes sometimes shared one color (passage). Real pieces of paper replaced painted flat depictions of paper. Real scores of music replaced drawn musical notation. Fragments of newspaper, playing cards, cigarette packs, and advertisements that were either real or painted interacted on the flat plane of the canvas as the artists tried to achieve a total interpenetration of life and art.

Lesson 27-10-2011
In this lesson we learned the what Analytic Cubism was.
Analytic Cubism:
Simple Class Definition
Analytic Cubism is simplifying forms, of still life breaking up the view point.
Definition from http://instruct.westvalley.edu/grisham/1d_analycub.html

We also drew several broken plane pictures.
Cubism was the most radical and influential “ism” in 20th Century art. It provided the catalyst to 20th Century art that the I5th Century Italian Renaissance provided to the I6th Century Italian High Renaissance. Cubism was the joint invention of Picasso and Braque. Dedicated “ to the simplification of painting”, they (attempted) to exclude all but the formal elements of art: line, shape, and color (formalism). Inspired by Cezanne, the Cubists developed a new way of depicting space which involved multiple and mixed perspectives. Because they believed that there “was no one fixed view of nature”, the figure and ground were given equal importance and broken into geometric components or facets. Cubism lead to abstraction and necessitated a new way of looking at art. The first phase, Analytical Cubism was more intellectual than its more decorative second phase, Synthetic Cubism.Analytical Cubism is the first developmental phase of Cubism. The work is difficult to read (interpret) and is willfully ambiguous.

Unit 2: Cubism
Oct 20th - Nov 24th 2011
Grade 9
Unit Question: How is painting like a perfume?
AOI: Human Ingenuity: Impact of Innovation and Creation on society; Taking action to think creatively.
You will be assessed through all four criteria:
A. Knowledge and Understanding: (DW blog assignment) discuss a cubist painting, and how it relates to your painting, using some specialized language, terms and concepts.
B. Application: Develop skills and apply techniques of cubism in your own work.
C. Reflection and Evaluation: (DW blog entries) Evaluate your work; consider feedback.
D. Personal Engagement: Demonstrate curiosity, self-motivation and willingness to take informed risks. Support and encourage peers.
Objectives 1. Gain an understanding of the cubist style of Picasso
2. Develop drawing skills and composition skills (countour, shading)
3. Create a multi-media studio still life (analitic cubism)
4. Create a multi-media cubist artwork using objects important to you (synthetic cubism)
So I got the coversheet for the unit.
We're going to have to write about a painting and it's techniques and then draw our own cubism painting and then compare the techniques in the two paintings.

Lesson 20-10-2011
In today's lesson we learned some basic techniques on abstract drawing for our next unit.
Our teacher set-up a table with a guitar, two boxes, a fallen over vase with two flowers, a box with paint brushes, and one of those small mannequins in front of a large board.
We did exercises were we had to draw it, draw it without looking at the drawing itself, drawing with fractured planes ( drawing from many different angles.
I'll post some photos later, I hope.

Finished
I finished the picture last week, but accidentally forgot to post. Blame my memory for that.
But NOW I'm here evaluating my drawing.
Here is my drawing:
You see that the background = totally black and the hair is really white. Quite a nice contrast i think myself.
I got my classmates to comment on it too and this is what they said:
Lodin: Nice hair, quite good, i like the background it makes the character stand out. Although the gray scale you used goes from extremely dark to extremely white. And there is no colour between that of the background and that of the guitar strap on the right side.
Sofie: I think the black had a very long jump to the next lighter colour. And is very black in comparison to the rest.
Mr. Roman: Your drawing could tolerate a lot more shading at the edge of her face on the right side of the picture. The right cheek be much darker.
Marta: Potato nose.
Okay I have become the joke of the class, because of my failed attempt at drawing a nose, see for yourself below. Her right eyes is also much darker than the left, and her lips are in a weird angle.
So I totally fail at drawing real people using the grid method, I'm much better using free hand. I think.

Update
I just darkened the background really black with crayons, but the edges aren't so good, i'll have to do something about that.
But i'm not moaning, with the hair lightened up a bit the drawing suddenly looks much better, i'll put a picture up soon. ATM i have no camera available.
*make mental note*
Remember to bring a photo camera, to the next lessons to be able to update with step by step pictures.

Frustrated
I am sooooo angry right now. The shadowing was a total failure. I don't know why it just doesn't look right.
But the worst is the nose...
Why do we have noses!!!! They're just annoying to draw. Especially on a picture with a frog's view. If you don't do it right it looks like a pig's nose.
So I'm really angry..... and then I came across this quote:
The man who makes no mistakes does not usually make anything.
So I decided I'd just have to practise drawing noses or else I'm going to make pig mutants.

Progress
Alright, i have so far drawn the outline and the dress + the hair. I decided to blackify the dress since I had to focus on the face and not the tiny details of the dress.
I decided to draw the hair on this one.
And then black out the background and rub away some of the colour so the hair is lighter.

Chosen
So after some heavy debating I choose picture 1.
Taylor live in the UK
Now I have the picture chosen I have to grid it.
This caused some problems, since Mr.Roman (my art teacher) had said that the drawing would need 1cm squares and the full size had to be 4cm squares.
The full A3 page had 11 boxes up and 7&a half width.
My problem: The picture with 1cm squares had 22 boxes and 16 width.
After a little discussion with my teacher he agreed to let me draw 2cm square boxes on the picture.
In the fashion the whole picture fit on my A3 sheet of paper.
After the grids I started drawing the outline, which was one of the things I feared. You see I'm pretty bad with simple lines, shadowing stuff, I'll be fine but lines?
And that's all I manages to do this lesson, next time I'll start drawing more details and see if I can start shadowing.

Task: Unit Icon
For this task, I had to pick an A5 and using the grid method transform it into an A3 drawing.
The picture had to have a nice balance between black and white, which I found out to be quite a task, or it had too much white or it had too little white. The black and white however was no problem, with the art room printer being able to ONLY print out black and white.
3 different picture we had to find, from a famous person OR someone who was your idol.
My class came up with the Dalai Lama (that's how you spell it?) Obama. Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter etc.
Me, being a real swiftie, of course went to Taylor Swifts Offical Website. And searched for nice pictures.
It wanted too choose most of them, but that was not possible. So I chose looking at their black and white contrast.
I came up with these 3 pictures:
Picture 1
Taylor live in the UK
Picture 2
Taylor live in Houston
Picture 3
Picture for Blender Magazine
Next time on this blog, I will choose 1!!!!!! of these pictures......

My First Entry
I just created this blog here on blogspot.com, and wanted to briefly inform anyone whos reading this that I DID NOT FORCE YOU TO READ.
Alright, now that that's clear, some other information.
There will probably be a weekly update probably on thursdays or fridays, depending on my memory, and when i have something to add, it will be added as soon as possible.
